A blue archive review from a new sensei

this review was originally written while i was a new blue archive player. i stopped playing afterwards.

blue archive is, first and foremost, a live service gacha game, with usual live service gacha game symptoms, which isn’t everyone’s thing. and I don’t mean the usual gambling and microtransactions complains, I mean how the game is designed in a broader sense. it’s the kind of game where it feels like everything is built on top of the gacha, as opposed to on top of some novel game mechanic. for example, you grind for materials to level up characters, you don’t know what skills are best without consulting a wiki, etc. my personal favorite gacha-ish mechanic is the room you get to decorate with furniture and invite students, which unfortunately involves my least favorite mechanic (crafting). i’m not complaining, but i would have been happier if they didn’t take the safest possible route.

to review a gacha game, you must judge it by gacha game standards - the characters. while this is an area is incredibly fierce competition with plenty of games casually creating iconic characters, there is an aspect where blue archive shines like no other game i’ve seen - that all characters are equally lovable, to the point where it’s hard to have a favourite. every single character is consistently strong, no exceptions. In contrast, Genshin is infamous for playing favourites with the archon characters, niche characters rarely get new content. the first time i opened up Project Sekai i can immediately tell Nightcord and WxS is their money printer. to this day, i still don’t have a fave in blue archive because i love each and every student.

the story and themes are notable here, when i usually wouldn’t talk about the plot of gacha games. not that the plot is groundbreaking, but i think people who hasn’t played the game would be surprised that the core focus of blue archive is youth liberation. it’s ultimately about agency of minors and your responsibilities as an adult. the world doesn’t treat them as people who can make their own decisions and impact on the world. then, when worst comes to worst, you are reminded that they’re just a bunch of kids. their naive ambitions aren’t tied down to reality exactly because they aren’t equipped to face it. they are helpless against adults trying to exploit them, and there are limits to your abilities too. regardless, the true responsibilities lies within you. if you don’t help them, no one will.

the game is set in this strange heaven like world inhabited by immortal female angel students, all except for sensei, of course. conflicts between students are, for the lack of a better term, video-game-ish - every fight is temporary because no one dies. this peace that everyone take for granted is what makes the villains of the story, who are all adults, feel completely alien. the heaven they have feel almost fragile and childlike, in the face of a species that actually has the ability to kill those immortal angels if you give them a reason to. in terms of vibes, the adults basically don’t even feel like they’re from blue archive, if that makes sense.

i will now address the elephant in the room - your students really, really, really want to fuck you. i really thought it’s a hentai thing but the game lowkey has the exact same vibes. practically, it’s a harem gacha game targeted towards young men, while trying to make the relationship wholesome and not overly creepy. thematically, sensei occupies an exclusive caretaker role to a group of youthful pent-up teenage girls. he provides not just mentorship, but fulfils their emotional and physical needs as well. to the students, it’s an expression of their needs and their way of bonding with a person they cherish. personally, it’s hot as fuck. you’re either cool with this or not, it’s just personal preference.

verdict: great but safe gacha gameplay, unusually consistently strong character designs, thematically has something to say, problematic teacher-student relationships can be a turn off or selling point. i give it an i-want-to-impregnate-Serina / 10.

I do not think jujutsu kaisen is misogynist

how did jujutsu kaisen get that reputation in the first place? well, it had a reputation for having good female representation in shonen, with a few major female characters. a couple of character deaths later, the ratio is pushed to a point where there’s barely any major female characters ¹.

the main disagreement is our definition of misogyny is in media. people talk as if stories have an obligation of represent minorities, but i find the “silence is violence” ethos counterproductive to being progressive. i think of misogyny as an active problem, where the author goes out of their way to devalue women, whether they realize it or not. it reflects how the author thinks of people in real life and teaches that mindset to the audience. this is also why i’m so disturbed by stories like zom 100 despite not being explictly “problematic”.

jujutsu kaisen isn’t really misogynist in that sense. female characters were never really written differently in the first place. if anything, the deaths are just regular jjk fumbles, where the audience feels like they were promised more screen time for their favourite character, and feels too cheated to even care about what the author was truly going for. it’s a shame because in hindsight, these were really poetic deaths.

frankly, infamous character deaths are where nearly all perception of jjk’s bad writing came from. if all of your favs survived we would all be glazing jjk. ↩

Ticco swiss roll review

Ticco is a foreign cafe brand that specializes in swiss rolls and coffee made from real Saudi Arabia beans. With their new branches opening, they’ve been making the rounds on social media. That’s why — we’ve bought a Ticco Golden Roll, to see if it’s truly — worth the hype. Cue intro

Okay, I lied. Ticco is Malaysian. This isn’t a real food review.

Though I have no proof, the misleading is 100% on purpose. Firstly, they call themselves “Ticco international” on social media. Second, they have that 1989 emblem on their bags to make you think it’s a old foreign brand. The heavy amounts of extremely clean marketing, too, gives it a foreign vibe. You usually only see that kind of marketing with multinational brands that can afford to pour that much into marketing, and with western sensibilities that demands sleekness.

Though, that facade falls apart to anyone whose Google search went beyond their social accounts. You quickly realize the marketing is more specifically what I call “Malaysian upperclass western” - made for and by Wealthy Malaysians who grew up speaking English as their native language, and along with it, English media and sensibilities.

The fact that we did buy the cake is saying a lot. Whether I like it or not, my background is wealthier than most people in the country, and their marketing strategy works to some extent on my friends and family. The fact that I’m writing in an English blog where I have no Malaysian friends visiting is also saying a lot.

In addition, it’s a youthful company heavily targeting viral social media fame. While the youthful marketing is not unlike, say, Zus Coffee, this feels much more cynical. Zus is a proudly domestic Starbucks, its main selling point is getting to chill in a cafe with aircon without the exorbitant pricing. Ticco, on the other hand, is trying to have its cake and eat it too - with targeted social media marketing and a fancy foreign facade, with local operating costs and foreign prices.

“Can we finally talk about the swiss roll?” Sure thing, hypothetical viewer. It’s barely a roll, but more like cream wrapped in cake. The cake itself feels like a fuller and eggier of already eggy Taiwanese style castella (古早味蛋糕)? The cream has a really nice custard taste. It doesn’t feel too heavy given the quantity, but it’s not so light that it feels cheap and unsatisfying. It’s sooooooo worth the price.

Okay look, I’m obviously not part of the target demographic. I cannot really praise a swiss roll in good faith when it costs RM28. Like you can get fuckton of swiss rolls with that money and be much happier. To give due credit, I do agree that Ticco’s swiss roll is an interesting take on something extremely common, but it’s not unique enough to justify the cost, which you can tell mostly went into the marketing. All I can think is, this is targeted towards people who have enough disposable income to be willing to spend quadruple on coffee to go to a Starbucks just for… vibes.

Uncontroversial thoughts on Bryan Johnson

in a vacuum, i think it’s cool¹ that someone is doing that kind of self experimentation, like “what if someone just healthmaxxed”². in reality, bryan johnson has smelly venture capitalist vibes. it’s a demographic that believe they can change the world alone without ever looking at the shoulders they’re standing on, and the same mindset is now being used on science. ageing is a problem as old as time, as complex as the universe. for a rich outsider to come in and claim they’ve solved it is disrespectful.

bryan johnson’s blueprint protocol isn’t “scientific”, obviously. you just can’t create create the ultimate paper by combining every possible paper, that’s just a literature review. it doesn’t say anything about how each change will interact, much less all of them at once. it’s about as proven as nothing, and that’s the definition of alternative medicine.

i have no problem with alternative medicine as long as they’re transparent about the efficacy. hopefully, people would seek normal proven medicine when it’s life threatening. i wish he is honest about how he’s just doing some crazy bullshit. it sounds less grandiose but i love bullshit! does he have to pretend it’s scientific and create a business of it? are venture capitalists devoid of joy?

and, why is he getting so much media attention and invited to so many talks? i know the answer. real research is boring and we all want stories. what if - there’s a very smart rich man, who founded a company that pieced together the perfect scientific protocol against ageing, and now he’s changing the world by spreading the knowledge? what if - his perfected formula is available at the low price of $49.00 at h-t-t-p-s blue print dot bryan johnson dot com? wouldn’t that be amazeballs?

people are weirded out by the blood exchange thing he did with his son, but “my feelings say it’s wrong” is not a good argument for why something is wrong. like that’s the exact reason why you cannot convince your conservative relative homophobia is wrong. it’s dumb because they’re taking risks for something that 100% doesn’t work, and dragging his son into his self-experimentation. ↩
i do think that kind of hyper-optimized life is joyless. i think i’m just not the demographic for this, and frankly most people would be turned off by his lifestyle. i would rather choose a happier life than 200 years of joyless routine. i definitely don’t envy his life enough to want to buy his health supplements. ↩

“永遠みたいな夜だった!” ✍️🔥🔥🔥🔥 <– the first line of the song Mekakushe - Endless Lovers

mekakushe - Love After 13.8 Billion Years [album]

Mekakushe is my new Synthion. If you ask me if I’m a fan of them, I don’t think I can answer you. Their average song feels too derivative for me to love their entire discographies.

It’s about me more than them, though. It’s called having a signature style, and me not liking said style. It’s how I feel about every artist I’m not into, where I have to put in effort to see the magic. You can’t just ask every artist to be your Personal Porter Robinson.

What differs everyone from Mekakushe and Synthion is how some of the songs just hit the spot for me. I wish I could say the same about every single song from them. It’s a shame I like an artist this much, yet I cannot call myself a fan.

Mekakushe in particular has a quality that I like to call “she thinks just like me fr”. If I were writing a song¹, I would have made the same songwriting choices as them. The songs become predictable, not in a “oh my god this damn drop where’s the creativity” way, but in a way where the most satisfying option is always chosen. Which reminds me of the few Kirara songs I know. Yes, the second Korean transgender electronic artist, the second one I’m comparing Mekakushe to, very random.

mekakushe - Endless Lovers / Goodnight Beige / おやすみベージュ

The most popular song of the album is Retronym of Love / 恋のレトロニム, mostly due to it being the ending theme for Kowloon Generic Romance, which is a pretty big deal for a small artist like her. But the highlight of the album for me is Endless Lovers, or Goodnight Beige in Japanese.

If i have to describe how the song feels, it would be “colorful” and “explosive”. The song immediately greets you the varied, chaotic, yet controlled, instrumentals that contrasts the songwriting. And it continues doing so even when the vocals start, only occasionally pausing and slowing down - not to give you time to breathe, you’re so drawn in that it doesn’t feel suffocating. Eventually, it builds up to the climaxes.

My favourite part of the climax is actually the bass, it just adds so much more to the song than it already had. And the little touches, like the bass when the song ends.

To give credit where it’s due, shoutout to the collaborators she works with. Unfortunately if you go on “credits” on your music streaming app, you get incomplete information, so you’d have to go on the description of every song on YouTube.

yosumi, MOTTO MUSIC - Endless Lovers / Goodnight Beige / おやすみベージュ

it’s Endless Lovers again. Because I like the song that much. Fuck it.

The original version of the song isn’t released with the album, but months before in a collaboration with MOTTO MUSIC, a dance music project; and sung by Yosumi.

I’ve given up on asking “how the hell does she do that?” I loved Mekakushe’s version but this is definitely the more unique version with the way Yosumi sings. She constantly sounds like she’s about to laugh, thought I like to imagine she’s about to cry.

In the same way the cover of the two versions contrast each other, Mekakushe’s version is more mature, while this is fuzzy and intimate. It puts the narrative in a different context.

Oh yeah, the lyrics, the whole point of the song, which I’ve ignored until now².

The song is about having a crush. The world suddenly becoming more colorful, and you start overthinking trivial things; you start looking forward to each and every day, to seeing them again. You’re simultaneously so desperate to confess yet register that as impossible in your mind. As your days go by, the uncertainty grows. You yearn so much for them when they aren’t there, but seeing them never sates you, all you want to do is give them every single part of you…

That wasn’t really my writing. All of that detail is from the song, and I had to cut it down as to not become a bad lyric translation. Endless Lovers is a love song that’s not particularly deep on paper, but it’s laser focused in very specific slices of the experience, packed with subtle nuances seemingly drawn from experience.

In my opinion, the turning point starts with the final chorus, the “ふつうの日々が~~~~~ 幸せと気づいたよ”. And then you get the same “宇宙の色が何色か分かったよ” from the last chorus in a completely different context thanks to the previous lines, and the next line. And you realise the beige in the title is referring to the color of their skin.

The climax of the song is narratively, the confession, and the final explosion of colorful instrumentals…

And then.

“永遠みたいな夜だった！”³

You see why the song is peak?

Nitpicking "Every Anime Studio Explained in 17+23 Minutes"

i’m not a sakuga nerd myself, all i’ve done is consume sakuga nerd content. hell, he probably watches more anime than me. no seriously i really expected the video to be normie slop but this guy seems to have put actual effort into research? especially the second video where there is noticably much less to nitpick.

if you wanna be fair, this is a topic that infamously lacks public information. and it’s a format where you have to research an insanely large range, and you only have like 5 minutes to explain each, nowhere near the amount of time required to explain anything in depth. that’s hard!

while it’s true that the anime industry have terrible conditions, there is a lot of nuance impossible to tell as outsiders like us, even to sakuga nerds. it’s never clear cut who to blame, you can’t see the full picture unless you’re literally there to watch it happen.

the worst thing fans can do is to pretend the problem doesn’t exist, the second worst thing is a widespread shallow understanding of what’s going on - e.g. mappa torture dungeon jokes. what comment sections love to do.

it’s bad for the animator because those jokes desensitizes the problem and enforces the narrative that it’s necessary to be this way for the quality. it’s bad for the studio because it proves that the average person doesn’t actually care enough to start real backlash, or care about improvements. we’re seeing mappa genuinely trying to improve, yet the comments in the new jjk trailer are still that one joke.

lastly, i’m not sure about highlighting specific incidences. i think it’s needed, but it suffers from the same shallow understanding problem if presented without the surrounding context. and i don’t know if the animators would want tweets on their personal account to be blasted to millions of ignorant fans.

I want people to talk more about music. If you sent me a link, I would have to listen a couple of times to get it, and there’s no guarantee I would notice or like the same things you do. My ass can never run a reaction channel. That’s why I felt like writing this - just random notes on a disorganised list of music I like. This may or may not become a new series.

I’m not a music reviewer, nor do I make music, so my writing wouldn’t be up to certain standards. But I’ve seen terrible music reviews of the same quality on college publications, and these are searchable - in the eyes of the all-knowing SEO gods, amateur articles and slop articles are regular articles. And my site is banned(tm) from Google because I got DMCA’d due to my background and I still haven’t appealed. Oops.

Yuka Nagase - Mofu Mohu [Album]

I randomly decided to listen to Yuka Nagase one day. I only knew her from Aiobahn - 宙でおやすみ / sora de oyasumi, a 10/10 song, easily one of Aiobahn’s best, which is a big enough endorsement to check out her discography.

Maybe I’m just prejudiced against vsingers, but I definitely wasn’t expecting an album like this from a vsinger with a cute avatar. I need to know the lore behind her two polar opposite personas.

Pardon my lack of music reviewer words for a sec.. I think it reminds me of those weirder Japanese artists, the likes of Hakushi Hasegawa. With their extensive use of elements that would absolutely ruin a song—being offbeat, unnatural transitions, and a lack of rhythm—it sounds like gibberish trying to mimic music until you listen again and realise what they were going for. It goes without saying that Hakushi Hasegawa is for illustration purposes only; this album isn’t on her level of weirdness—few things are.

Anyway, the more obvious comparison would be Sōtaisei Riron / Theory of Relativity. It copies the band’s signature style perfectly - a voice so sweet it sounds somewhat uncanny with the rock instrumentals. There’s one other person making that comparison, so I’m happy.

Even though I didn’t like the album, I’m so glad I decided to check her out. I admire people who don’t compromise on their artistic vision just because someone like me won’t like it.

Favourite tracks: The Secret Maturity, hikari, THSK

Yuka Nagase, Mekakushe - Even so, the world is beautiful. [EP]

The second newest Yuka Nagase thing, the second thing I clicked on. Much more conventional, beautiful, short, and sweet EP. Despite being a collab, Yuka Nagase and Mekakushe’s vocals fit so well you can’t even tell who’s who. Which, too, is yuri. There are only 3 tracks, and the rest are interludes. Sadly, my Japanese isn’t good enough to understand the monologues, save for some words.

Cleaning Blue in particular reminds me of Yuzu - Hikare, one of my favourite songs of all time. I see it as a lost Hunter X Hunter ending theme song that would have been if the anime had continued, though I highly doubt that’s the case in reality. While Hikare has Yuzu’s uncanny ability to invoke a wave of nostalgia, Cleaning Blue isn’t far behind either, and does so with a more modern sound.

The more I listen to other songs (including others in this post!), I realise how well produced and written this EP is. Mekakushe is special. And I haven’t tried to understand the interludes yet!!

Regallily - My Dear Vega

I didn’t know this was Rent-a-Girlfriend S4’s ending theme when this got recommended. That knowledge just reaffirmed me what I already knew second hand about the Rent-a-Girlfriend: the plot is ass, everything else is a masterclass in attractive waifus. It’s no surprise that they get masterpieces for their opening and ending themes as well.

Apart from the very unique vocals, the songwriting is equally unconventional. My Dear Vega is a song that edges you a lot. It’s a song built around edging, not what the buildup leads to.

I try to ignore what fear of judgment has to say, but I can hear hypothetical online people complaining about the edging. I’ve heard the complaints for songs like Lil Nas X - Star Walkin, like whereeee’s the drop stop edging me… I’m just gonna come out and say that I don’t really get drops, especially in EDM songs. A lot of songs just spend so much time building up the energy AND your expectations, only to ruin the song with a passable drop that breaks the flow entirely. As far as I’m concerned, a song without a drop is a song with only the good parts. /rant /don’t kill me

There’s a part that I think interpolates… Deck the Halls, that one Christmas carol that goes “🎶 deck the hall with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la!”. Intentional or not, I’m a sucker for music that reuses melodies so powerful they stick around for hundreds of years. Great use of that power.

THE LUV BUGS, 知声, KBSNK, 二錠 - WING IT!!!

I still don’t know what THE LUV BUGS is. They do concerts? They’re also like a collective that invites artists to collab? There’s also a podcast? I dunno.

But yeah, they have caused some very unlikely collabs by casually summoning every artist you know. I am fortunately protected by my ignorance, for I don’t actually know half of them, otherwise I would have gotten a heart attack from how peak it is.

If there’s one luv bugs song I must show everyone, it’s WING IT!!!. And the music video is mandatory. Everything is as you would expect from the title. It fucking. The song is. It’s fucking. What the fuck is going on.

When you see the their “references” playlist you get a glimpse of the chaos that led to the creation of more chaos (this song). Can you imagine making music in a headspace you get from listening to a playlist like that.

Soushi Sakiyama - Diary

Soushi Sakiyama’s ability to invoke nostalgia in anime endings needs to be studied. The Sanda adaptation did not disappoint.

As for the MV and the full song… I don’t know the lyrics so I don’t know the significance of a group of men dressing the exact same in a white room. I don’t know what the middle part came from. Why did it suddenly become weird? Why? I’ve long since moved past that close-minded childhood where I hated 2000s pop songs having a completely different snippet at the end. But this is so jarring, I just went what?????

Halcali - おつかれSUMMER

TikTok song. People hate TikTok for ruining music or something, but you can’t deny its effect on niche/unusual songs (re)surfacing and blowing up to insane levels (that they deserve).

This song is like, old-timey and modern at the same time. Frankly, I don’t know enough about Japan to draw comparisons, but all I can think of is the one sakana song. And it’s modern as in, the production, the rapping, and the MV that’s made in 2025. The summer-y silliness aside, it’s almost scary how well put together this song is.

Kenshi Yonezu, Hikaru Utada - JANE DOE

Perhaps the most powerful combination of names someone has ever conceived, perhaps fitting for an adaptation of peak cinema. The vocals are obviously really, really, really good. The production feels heavy and suffocating. Waltz-ish (?) songwriting makes me feel like I’m spiraling down an endless staircase.

Synthion - 雪割草

I wouldn’t say I have a love-hate relationship with Synthion’s music, but I do have conflicting feelings. However, sometimes she would drop something so good it makes you go “absolute cinema”. No one else could have made a song like this.

It’s very Blossom coded, which was my favorite Synthion song, so I might be a little biased. The album is overall less electronic and more (j-)rock, so I’m definitely twice as biased.

In addition, this is the best that Synthion’s vocals has ever sounded in my opinion. Singing-wise, you can hear her pouring her soul into the music; they are also processed in a way that tickles my ears in the best way possible.

Completely unrelated fun fact, Synthion is Korean-American. Which makes the whole composing-for-Blue-Archive thing less surprising. It would be cool if she sang in Korean, but as someone who will never sing a Chinese song even if you pay me, I understand she’ll never do that.

AND on a semi-related note, can we talk about how unfair RE:cyanotype is? Seriously, attacking me with Cyanotype AND Blossom nostalgia? Gaaaaaaahhh.

Don't isolate yourself

i’m not a lesswrong user, and i’ve sadly never had a lesswrong phase, so i can’t really praise or criticize it. but i find critiques of lesswrong extremely interesting - particularly the criticism that it’s largely disconnected from the outside world.

strangely enough, it reminds me of my mindset i was when i was… 10. ok so, my family went for a trip to japan at the time, and i got exposed to hentai, and for better or worse that permanently changed my brain and triggered my puberty. even my homeroom teacher said i’ve matured. it’s like i unlocked a superpower and i started to think a lot - tons of deep philosophy concepts and thought experiments… at least, deep to a 10 year old.

10 year old me did not know philosophy concepts back then, i only have my own concepts in my mind that i reference. i was basically isolated from the outside world, both in terms of practical applications, and the insanely rich history of existing thinkers from the span of human history. it’s not like i wasn’t aware that there are thinkers out there, but i don’t expect a 10 year old to go out of their way to study philosophy, much less understand them.

obviously, the group of 30 year old white guys from silicon valley jerking each other off are much smarter than one 10 year old in puberty jerking himself off. the only similarity is the limited practical applicability. 10 year old me’s deep philosophy didn’t inform my worldview, influence my decision-making, nor allow me to engaging in conversations with others. just like how lesswrong isn’t useful for studying philosophy because it only ever uses its own jargon and (existing) philosophy concepts (re)invented by itself.

instead of the repugnant conclusion, you cite Yudkowsky, E. (2007). Torture vs. Dust specks. Yes, it’s technically not the same thing. Yes, I’m sure the comments and the site are very insightful. However, why would i as an outsider ever study an internet forum, instead of the entire field of western philosophy?

the most extreme version of this phenomenon is crackpot science - extremely internally consistent systems, but they are not falsifiable, not practical, and not helpful towards the field. they start to fall apart once you start connect it to the outside world. i believe crackpots are intelligent people, just wasting their talent to pursue a delusion, when they could have made meaningful impact if they didn’t look down on the unremarkable.

and lastly, it reminds me of my current self. i said lesswrong community have a quality that makes you feel like you’re peeking into someone’s entire life, for a reason. when you have a shower thought about whether you’d rather one guy get tortured and 8 billion people get dust in their eyes, you don’t google for existing philosophical concepts. lesswrong embraces applying that principle to outside a person, kinda treating itself like a hivemind…? which is why i see a lot of similarities between lesswrong and personal wikis (like your obsidian vault), with lesswrong being structured like a hivemind’s wiki, with heavy use of internal links.

after all, wikis are meant to reflect how you (or your hivemind) perceive the world and the culmination of what you know. for example, for existing concepts, you’d link the [[Repugnant Conclusion]] note that contains what you know about the topic, which itself links to stuff on the web. if the value of note-taking is the connections, then you should link notes to the outside world as much as possible¹.

i think LLMs have tremendous value in this. using chatgpt to google ungoogleable subject is one of my favorite new things we got out of the AI boom. and thankfully we live in an era where LLMs are extremely accessible thanks to AI companies burning vc money. ↩

Do you know… youtuber Probably Pretentious hated the anime. Unfortunately he has probably pretentious in his name so I can’t even criticize him for being pretentious.

Jokes aside, he did explain why it didn’t work for him pretty well. People like to say things like “x youtuber missed the point”, but isn’t that how tastes work? he has a different worldview and it didn’t resonate with him. Sure, you can always learn more about a piece of work to change your mind and enjoy it, but he’s not really obligated to do so. It’s impossible to do that to everything you consume anyways. But I digress.

Firstly, saying that these things doesn’t happen in real life is just like saying Scum’s Wish isn’t realistic - which is probably true, but that doesn’t mean teenagers literally don’t have sex in real life. Class divides do happen among real kids, so is the gender divide, and putting two schools beside each other is a recipe for some really toxic rivalry. I know that doesn’t make sense but good luck trying to convince child me that.

I don’t think KaoruHana is meant to be taken literally, I don’t think it’s meant to dive into any of these topics. At its core, it’s an overly idealistic kindness propaganda. Have you ever really really wanted to hurt someone who hurt you, then regretted it when you did? This is a world where you decided against it, and emotionally risked yourself for a better outcome. And it pays off because the world is much kinder than you think. Turns out, you’re not the only one with that regret. They hurt you because they were afraid too. Compromises are never fair, you will still think you deserve more, but who the fuck cares about any of that when you’ve made a new friend.

Yes, being overly idealistic does dilute all the serious topics the story deals with, which is why it didn’t work for some. But I think it’s also why it worked so well. It’s much easier to justify putting aside your differences when you’re facing miniature versions of real world problems, especially when they’re all young teenagers with healthy emotional support from adults.

I’ll admit that combining rivalry between schools, class divide, and the patriarchy into a single plot might be too messy. Despite that, the story manages to be amazingly nuanced - as in, human. Being in the wrong doesn’t make you a bad person, it just means you were wrong. Of course, you’re watching from Rintarou’s perspective, you only got to see the other sides of the story thanks to his relentless kindness. Thanks Rintarou-kun.

I think KaoruHana is intended to inspire the same in real life, on situations with real stakes. Like, I think it’s genuinely a great manga for boys. There is an understanding that men, especially teenagers, are also victims of the patriarchy that you don’t get much elsewhere. No one chose to be born in a certain way, some will treat you harshly for your supposed privilege that you don’t really want. The story teaches that the solution isn’t to fight back on people who have no other way to cope with their situation, but to break the cycle as a new generation.

Yes, it’s a big ask to ask a wounded person to risk even more and compromise for a better outcome, yet KaoruHana did that extremely convincingly. How can you not want to be kind after seeing this display of wholesomeness?

Stop bothering with Zsh and just use Fish

You know why everyone installs Zsh in the first place? Because they want a Fish-like experience. Which you usually do with a ton of plugins. Zsh-autosuggestions in particular is Fish inspired.

A tutorial will usually first present it like the most innovative thing ever, then tell you to install Oh My Zsh. Apart from having weird vibes, OMZ is bloated tons of stuff that you will never need, with a gigantic and confusing default config file, and installing non-OMZ plugins still requires manually doing git clone. I guess they only called it a framework, not framework + plugin manager, cause it’s so bad at managing plugins. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it per se, I just don’t feel excited about using it, and the whole point of the upgrade is to feel good about using your terminal.

Despite that, there’s a reason why OMZ is still the de facto Zsh plugin manager. It gives you all the sane defaults with just one command so you can jump in and instantly feel the “oh my zsh” or something. It has a plugin for pretty much everything out there. And the competition. The competition. Is a complete mess.

Zsh has an insane amount of competing plugin managers and 80% ended up abandoned eventually. It’s an xkcd 927 (competing standards) situation, but extreme to the point where it doesn’t feel real. The readme of zsh_unplugged explains this pretty well.

if you still want to use Zsh

urm…. I don’t really have a recommendation as someone who has only tried a few and quit years ago.

In terms of alternatives to OMZ, there’s zsh-quickstart-kit, which I guess is the closest thing to it.

As for plugin managers, when I was still using Zsh, ZInit was the goat. It supports plugins from OMZ and Prezto, lightning fast performance thanks to turbo mode (async loading). The big problem is the extremely confusing documentation and syntax for something that’s actually very simple underneath. If you want a reference for a config you can find my old .zshrc here.

For a minimal elegant solution there’s also zsh_unplugged as mentioned just now. Just a ~20 line function you can yank into your jortz. Plug tuah.

the part where I shill Fish

what’s special about Fish? nothing. You don’t have to do anything and it just works. You can use Fish just fine with zero plugin or config. And by that I mean all the autocomplete and conventional text editor keybinds. You don’t even need a bazillion OMZ plugins for completion, because Fish has a fish_update_completions command that automatically generates them from manpages. Insane.

Okay to be fair, ctr + backspace is disabled by default, due to differences in terminals. So it’s nearly perfect.

Also, you might have heard how Fish is (intentionally) not POSIX compliant. Yes, the lack of && was a huge pain point until they added it a couple of years ago. But it’s not much of a problem in practice because: you can always run stuff in bash when you need it anyways, and shebangs exist.

bonus

There are more shells out there than the big 3, with pretty interesting ideas. Try them!
Bash, or more specifically, Readline, can do more than you think - tab completion, history search, undo, etc. Most already have default keybinds, but you can configure to feel more conventional.
- There’s also ble.sh, which replaces Readline in Bash, and provides syntax highlighting, auto suggestions and more… As glad as I am that it exists, I’m not sure why would I use this over fish.

The meow_d note-taking/PKMS setup™ (and what NOT to do)

Like a lot of people, I went through a PKM phase where I watched a ton of YouTube videos on different ideologies, from PARA to zettelkasten, tried different software, like notion and Joplin. The kind of phase where you’re really motivated to finally change yourself for good, but deep down you knew no productivity system you try ever lasts and you will go back to my pathetic life sooner or later.

But by some miracle, my VSCode + foam setup actually stuck around and became an indispensable part of my life.

my setup

firstly, I autostart VSCode/Neovim on startup
- one of the best tips I can give, try it!
daily note - the main entrypoint
- the journal section allows me to always have a written record of what i’ve done each day
- daily checklist, kinda self care and therefore require energy. I skip this a lot
- the notes section serve as an inbox/scratchpad for any thoughts or random stuff, and notes i’ve taken each day
- this system is time-based, where my random thoughts are gold
normal notes
- everything is backlinks, roam/obsidian-like
- i started heavily utilizing this by taking notes in class, basically summarizing the slides in my own words. Eventually i started to just take notes for fun
- more about recording knowledge, how i conceptualize what i’ve learn or my more well-defined opinions
weekly review
- reviews what i’ve done each week
- each week i’ll set a projects/theme i need to accomplish (e.g. try makeup), but this system hasn’t worked out well
todo.md - the underutilized entrypoint
- the idea is to list out my projects and sources of entertainment, like an entry point for everything i want to do. this is rarely utilized

the PKM myth

There are a lot of conflicting advice on what you should and shouldn’t do. For example, in zettelkasten, you should have one zettelkasten only, atomic notes, tags over categories, master notes, an entrypoint for all of your knowledge, etc. but i only succeeded because i didn’t follow someone else’s setup religiously and did my own thing.

if there’s one key takeaway, it’s this: all productivity systems are developed for one specific person, who probably lives in a completely different life than you. They wake up in a different time of day, some have families, different hobbies, different jobs, etc. there isn’t a single methodology out there that works for you without modifications.

most importantly, everyone have different problems they want to solve with note-taking. zettelkasten people lean towards academic jobs that involves heavy knowledge collection and synthesis. At worst, a lot of gurus’ whole job is marketing their methodology to sell people courses.

To me, 90% of the benefit came from the fact that I have a place to write things down, which can easily be provided by Google Keep or a RM1.20¹ notepad. Plus, I don’t worry about remembering anything anymore. You don’t have to write everything down, even just a little bit allows me to refresh my memory. It’s especially useful in journaling, which gives your awareness in what you’ve done in this week or month.

To this day, I still don’t have the magical life-changing benefits the proponents claim. If you ever achieve that, all the power to you, I just don’t believe it’s a real thing to 99% of people. in Joan Westenberg’s rather divisive “I Deleted My Second Brain” article, they goes as far as to argue that the premise of an archival-based second brain is fundamentally flawed. it is also a cautionary tale of what NOT to do for your PKM - don’t religiously capture everything, don’t spend too much energy on maintenance, and only do what works for you.

Managing cognetive load

I am currently not diagnosed with anything, but anyone can tell I’m not exactly neurotypical. I genuinely don’t know if I have autism or ADHD or anything, but I know my problems.

I’m not sure if my brain is different, but I get tired extremely easily. And when I do, my brain gets too slow to think in real-time, working memory gets significantly nerfed (as in, ram, not hard disk). I start going on autopilot and follows my instincts without thinking, causing me to overexert myself and making me even more tired.

I’m like a computer swapping important stuff just to run a video game and freezing the DE, so that you can’t even close your apps. When I’m tired, I skip things like showering and journaling to prioritize the task in front of me. It’s like a carrot dangling in front of head it’s just hours of shortsightedness thinking the problem will go away if I just try for 5 more minutes. In the worst-case scenario, I get to a point where I keep forgetting what I’m currently doing and start moving on to different tasks.

I think seeing the problem in the lens of cognitive load theory makes sense. It’s literally an indispensable part of UI/UX - non-tech-literate people tend to be inefficient with computers due to a combination of unoptimized workflows and unfamiliarity. The version of me in extreme tiredness resembles these people with how messy my technology usage is. A UX designer’s whole job is to optimize cognitive load across novice and experts.

Luckily I am tech literate, I can always try making my workflows more optimized to manage my cognitive load. To varying degrees of success.

I’ve decided everything needs to be even lower in overhead. I’ve created scripts and systemd timers for git sync, create daily note, create weekly notes, etc. eventually I plan to configured Neovim and VSCode to open up todo.md and the daily note on startup too.

todo

One of the benefits of having a todo system is a backup of my working memory, as a sort of… second brain (heh). My brain will still be swapping, but it’s kinda cached and therefore much faster… If that makes sense.

But none of that worked in practice because I am always too tired to bother. Don’t get me wrong, not utilizing your second brain is fine to me, because I don’t think religiously following methodologies is a good thing. I like listening to my own body and if I feel like I’m wasting my time I’ll just stop bothering organizing my notes. However, this is a case where not following the methodology harmed me in the long run.

In a broader sense, I need a rule to prioritize self care over everything, avoid blindly following instincts¹. I need to internalize the fact that, if I have no energy for my PKM and self-care, I probably don’t have the energy for other tasks and I’ll be miserable, and I’ll need to rest. I need to force myself to utilize the notes as an up-to-date backup of my working memory - what am I currently doing, the current list of tasks, etc.

multitasking

The opposite problem of me over-focusing. Multitasking is inefficient, full stop. It should be avoided at all costs.

I have apps and tabs open in the background so that I get to them later. This is a form of using my computer as working memory, but unfortunately they either always end up staying there for weeks, or get distracted by it.

I think it’s better to close my tabs and put tasks in todo, or save in daily note, whenever possible. It gives the tasks more purpose and gives me a change to evaluate if I really want to do it.

workspaces

Part of why I have so much trouble with distractions is my inconsistent use of workspaces. I really really don’t like using alt-tab. My browser is always on the first workspace - socials pinned, plus whatever I’m doing. My VSCode is always at the second workspace. When something gets too complex I move them out to a third or forth workspace. One task can span across 3 workspaces, with stuff like socials overlapping. Essentially my workspaces are consistent but a complete mess.

That’s why, for the past weeks, I’ve been switching to Niri. It’s a pretty unorthodox window manager that can only be described as a “scrolling window manager”. I thought it will take me time to get used to it, but I got used to it immediately. It turns out it’s exactly my dream DE, what I wanted GNOME to be.

Just by getting rid of alt tab, I was able to clean up my use of workspaces - first workspace acts for the pinned essential stuff, like journal, socials, and music; everything else afterward for each task. It sounds messy if you say it out loud but it makes complete sense to me. Did I mention I really really don’t like alt tab?

And then there’s also the lack of convenience on mobile. Typing on a phone is clunky, so is opening up Termux and doing git sync, so is using Obsidian. so… I’m gonna start using google keep for notes on the go, Obsidian when I do need to access stuff. I guess.

It’s not ideal but you know what? Being a purist sucks, utilizing multiple tools when they are suitable is cool. You can use separate specialized tools for bookmarks, todo’s, journaling, etc. You don’t have to integrate every tool to Obsidian, because Obsidian is only a second brain, not your actual brain!

I think that’s what mindfulness is about but I’m not sure. I need to look into what mindfulness actually is I feel like my idea is probably very far from the actual thing. ↩

Cancel culture is bad, actually

ok, have you watched oshi no ko? the LoveNow arc? what’s your reaction to the akane’s cyberbullying? seriously, if your answer is “this is so thought provoking, words that we didn’t think twice to say can leave deep scars on people”, you’re an angel. for the vast majority of people, you probably thought it’s so cheesy of them to try to lecture you, the story isn’t realistic, these people are comically evil so we need to kill them, or worst, “japanese internet sure is cruel unlike us here”. even with the knowledge that it’s literally based on a real story, you move on with your life with nothing changed.

it’s 11am and you finally get out of bed for your phone. you go on twitter as usual, you say hi to all the moots you love. and then. and then you see a clearly incorrect tweet, said in this annoying authoritative tone. you tighten your fist in anger. your cat meows at you because she’s starving and you told her “not now kitten, someone is wrong on the internet”. you stretch your hands and start formulating your quote post, eventually arriving in the most scathing post you can make. then you hit post and watch your beloved moots reaffirm your beliefs. this starts a war between your circle and the defenders. but you can’t give in, for you are the last bastion of sanity, the wokest leftist circle against the bad people. “twitter is terrible, i hate this place” you tweet out. (that tweet eventually leaves your target audience and spawns 2 independent discourses in its replies)

exaggeration aside, i meant it when i said “the vast majority of people”. nearly everyone is complicit in this behavior. you are the reason why someone else’s social media experience is awful. i mean, when is the last time you scrolled down to the comment section after you watched the video? how many tweets have you reposted checking if it’s correct? how many times have you hopped on a bandwagon to shit on someone just because your moots are also doing it?

the internet puts you in a tunnel vision where you’re the only one who’s correct and you’re the police who needs to fix the world. you never question anything because the enemies are racists \ transphobes \ pedos \ any bad thing, and there is no way {bad thing} can be right. conveniently ignoring that you never verify if anyone is actually a {bad thing}, or that your idea of {bad thing} might be misinformed.

the best example is probably the problematic media discourse. it’s a phase everyone goes through when they were 14, before realizing how weird those ideas are. a culture that centers around moral purity of a person based on what media they consume is indeed, not very progressive.

and i find it interesting that people would rather believe in the absurd than realize they’ve been lied to. if you tell someone a bad person is also transphobic, they would just believe you without doubt. you can just feed them more and more lies, no matter how absurd, they will get angrier and angrier to compensate, the image of that person gets more and more comically evil. cognitive dissonance is just that powerful.

my least favorite meme of all time is the “when the random e-celeb you dislike for just being dumb and annoying and unfunny finally is outed for a legitimate reason to dislike them” tweet. because that’s like an objective terrible thing to do. admission that you wish for more suffering in the world so you could justify hating someone who didn’t do any deserving until now. to anyone who has ever celebrated when someone got outed as a groomer, i wish you a very… live a happier life and realize your obsession with hating innocent people is unhealthy and the world would be better if there were less groomers.

i will inevitably sound like i’m up my own ass when i talk about how the crowd is stupid, but i am more upset at human nature than anything. i want to believe we’re inherently good or something. but even in my best efforts, social media brings out the worst in us. i still hurt people, trample on innocents without looking because i’m rushing to get somewhere, and my kindness have a limit before i lash out again.

so where’s the hope? what can we even do about this? i don’t know. i wouldn’t be here if i knew how to solve humanity.

if there’s anything i learned from cohost’s design (and mastodon’s reluctance to implement quote posts), it’s that social media design can only do so much. cohost was better mainly due to the culture attracted by the demographic and cumbersome design. #cohost meta was still consistently one of the worst places on the site, all the AI discourse was just terrible.

however, i have personally reached the conclusion that we need to defund the police. take away the power from the authority who keep abusing it.

the angle becomes apparent when you think of it as a court of law, and frame this as a… guilty until proven innocent and retributive justice issue. a court that’s insanely bad at telling who’s actually a bad person, much less punish them appropriately. there is no justice, bad people get away with everything and good people get hurt. there is no nuance in discussions, no reason for anyone to change as a person.

i think people get upset when you point out cancel culture is bad because of the lack of a better alternative. who else would do anything about bigotry if not us? are we naive enough to believe this could work? and i really don’t know the answer is that. but i’ve seen enough innocent lives being harmed, how the internet turned me into an angry animal blindly attacking everything in sight. it’s just a naive hope of mine, but i wish for a world where we fight with the facts, not anger.

i am annoyed by this article for a lot of reasons, but most of them are ones where i can agree to disagree. the actual real problem is that it’s a boomer rant, a “why aren’t things fun anymore” post written out of anger. i can enjoy rants when they are funny and no one gives the guy power, but this isn’t one of those cases.

to illustrate what i mean:

Like, just to calibrate here: you know how some code editors will automatically fill in a right bracket or quote when you type a left one? You type “ and the result is “|”? Yeah, that drives me up the wall. It saves no time whatsoever, and it’s wrong often enough that I waste time having to correct for it.

And that’s a predictable operation that inserts a single character! What we’ve invented is an entire fake persona that will waste your time entire paragraphs at once.

her preferences of not having autopair is interesting to me. most programmers do have autopair enabled, and it’s especially powerful with auto indent. if your IDE is good enough, you don’t even need a formatter for properly formatted code. but i can relate to cases where i wanted to type a singular ( to make a frowny face, and i have a similar reaction to most of Microsoft Word’s QOL features that was added and enabled without my knowledge. stuff like auto capitalize, auto grammar fixing, etc. i think these things should be clearly informed to the user when enabled.

do you see the difference between a rant and talking normally? it’s the ability to agree to disagree. it’s open mindedness. it’s normal to be frustrated as a user but if you let that anger take over you, you become unreasonable. there’s nothing wrong with people who do prefer auto capitalize, autopair, or llm autocomplete, but you don’t have time to stop and think in a rant.

do you know? the famous 2048 is actually a ripoff of a ripoff of.. Threes! cause i didn’t. i’ve always thought 2048 was original. i have played threes once, but i never got into it, the similarity probably never crossed past meowdy’s mind.

the developers of threes were understandably very salty about this. their official devlog blog post tastes like fried chicken. so is this wired article titled “Design Is Why 2048 Sucks, and Threes Is a Masterpiece”, which tastes like an entire salt lake. 12ft.io link as im not paying for that article.

i mean, it’s understandable. these are good old hardworking honest indie game developers. they do the thing where they brainstorm ideas and iterate on prototypes and stuff, and after 14 hardworking months, they have a polished final product. all that’s left is to sell it for $6 and drown in the praise from reviewers… etc etc… all of that just to have their dreams ruined by 2048.

the past me would probably have been pretty mad at 2048. i used to hate ripoffs with a passion, i used to hate chinese companies’ disregard for copyright, i hated when honest creators get ripped off by soulless companies with a worse version of their vision. i gravitated towards the (largely western) culture where applications are clean and free of enshittification, people care about the original high quality product instead of some cheap ripoff. you shouldn’t play genshin, go buy a switch and play BOTW instead, that kind of attitude.

it’s not like copyright and patents don’t also exist outside the west, it’s more like, outside of rich western countries, people care far more about paying less than originality or fancy advertising. i didn’t realize this at the time, but the culture i liked so much comes from privilege.

that reality sets in once you grow up and start to worry about money. my views on copyright changed in the opposite direction. perhaps to compensate, my views on money and piracy changed in the other direction.

as a kid i didn’t really have a concept of money, so anything that isn’t free isn’t available. thank god for ads so we can get by for free. and the people who actually pay for this shit. nowadays i realize ads aren’t really doing creators any favors. just pick a random trending game on the play store - you’re probably getting some soulless slop whose job is to get you to watch ads. money has to come from somewhere and you get what you pay for. i imagine an ideal world where people are willing to pay for quality software, where the masses could recognize they deserve better than slop, where i paid Wired for the article and encouraged you to pay.

from my outsider’s view, the Apple world, something i’ve previously hated with a passion, embodies that ideal world. people are willing to pay for an overpriced phone, and in return, they get an experience free of bloatware and slop. apple charging developers money on the app store might be unfair, but, it was probably not only necessary, but also not enough. same thing goes with mac apps, it’s normal for one developer to get an idea, make a mac exclusive app, make a fancy website, and then charge $40 for it.

i think it’s hypocritical for child me to hate on Apple (for being overpriced) due to my own economic circumstances, while admiring what they embody. i also think it’s hypocritical to view a free-to-play world positively, when that’s the cause of everything i hated!

my close-minded attitude also prevented me from seeing the effort that were put into imitators that aren’t necessarily mindless ripoffs. even with Genshin’s uncanny similarities to BOTW and gacha mechanics, it has completely different gameplay. and the thing is, gacha systems are designed to be generous for free-to-play players and unreasonable for people who actually wants to pay. the end result is a free-to-play game subsidized by a minority of paying players, which works because most people in the world can’t justify paying 60 freedom dollars for a video game. gameplay wise, it’s also a pretty strong reward system. it’s not an inherently evil system like the kind of people who has never touched a mobile game and feels like they need to call it gambling so that they don’t seem like a loser who would support those weird anime games would suggest, like how i wouldn’t call expensive console games for being inherently evil for being inaccessible to most people on the planet.

but there is a world that doesn’t seem bound by those rules - the open source world, arguably where i’m the closest to. it embodies the naive mindset that it’s possible to have your cake and eat it too. everything is free, subsidized by the life force of the developers and companies from their advertising budgets. and yet, it’s notably actually enshittification resistant. no matter how much you pay Apple, you really don’t know what they are going to do tomorrow, it doesn’t stop their anti-consumer practices.

in an alternate reality without open source, people would call you crazy for suggesting something like that would work. and yes, in our reality, most open source software do kinda suck, but the ones who has succeeded are astonishing. you can focus on the Gimps and Sucklesses, but you’d be ignoring the Blenders and Linuxes.

with open source in mind, copyright - the ownership of things that don’t physically exist - now seems more like a necessary evil that gets in the way of something potentially even better. in a perfect world, the only thing left for copyright to protect is the creator’s pride. with the anti-ai conversation being largely driven by pride, with zero real regard for the actual ethics, i don’t really have a desire to protect anyone’s pride.

all this is to say…. my gut reaction is to threes is, “so pretentious”. it’s a simple mobile game. no matter how much work goes into refining an aluminum ball it’ll never turn into gold. the creator’s reaction are justified, but what about that wired article? i think it reeks of the same kind of close-mindedness i had years ago. there is nothing wrong with 2048 being a simpler and more addicting game. regardless of how popular 2048 is, Threes! is still universally recognized as “the best mobile game that has ever mobile gamed” by reviewers. i think, the most morally superior ideology isn’t between BOTWs and Genshins, but open source. so unless you’re open source you shouldn’t get to act all high and mighty. and you know what? 2048 is open source, so i’m going to call it the morally superior option.

i haven’t read every single yuri out there - in fact, i probably hasn’t scratched the surface. but you’re not here for an objective list, aren’t you? just like how the most average face in the world is a blurry blob that does not tell you about society; the average, lowest common denominator opinion is devoid of humanity.

on the yuri definition spectrum (more on that later), he’s very much on the “this too is yuri” mindset. it’s reflected by his works being devoid of any explicit yuri. you’re not supposed to speculate if senpai and kouhai are dating based on their actions in the manga, nor wait for them to explicitly kiss on camera. instead, you are supposed to feel the yuri energy emanating and assume they are already in love with each other.

the lack of anything explicit makes Futaru Escape oddly mature, in the sfw way. it’s about living as an adult and trying to make a living, and escapism from that.

in the English-speaking yuri community, Asumi-chan and Does It Count If You Lose Your Virginity to an Android? are nearly tied in terms of status, in a unique position that should have been unique to one manga. the cute/wholesome porn category, i suppose.

personally, Asumi-chan appealed to me significantly more. as good as android sex is, i don’t think i could have a personal connection to it the way i do to Asumi-chan. Asumi-chan is not unlike me - a young, shy, and inexperienced college student. she has a small body that makes you want to do all sorts of things to it. and the various girls she had sex with certainly thought the same. i guess that’s partly the reason too, having sex with one android doesn’t seem as appealing to my poly ass as exploring a huge pool of girls.

most importantly, she loves sex - the story too. in a world where queer media falls victim to fetishization and censorship and internalized homophobia, Asumi’s simple minded sex-positive world is refreshing. why aren’t we living in a world like that? it isn’t for any good reason. maybe you don’t have a reliable brothel-visiting senpai to guide you into the sapphic world that you otherwise couldn’t have gone on your own. it’s a cishet’s world and you’re lucky to be livin’ in it. you’re probably not gonna get hate crime’d in your lifetime but the fact that you have to worry that at all is insane. politicians around the world aren’t gonna make sex work legal anytime soon.

Asumi-chan is a window to an ideal world. you know that world is somewhere out there, but by the time you get there, you won’t be a young college student anymore.

best drama: The Summer You Were There

if i was making a more definitive and objective list, Bloom Into You would have been here. sadly, i never truly understood the yuri classic. a major theme of the manga is the aroace spectrum, more specifically gray-romanticism…. a topic that i don’t really get.

in its place, we have The Summer You Were There. it’s a newer manga than bloom into you for sure, but it feels like it has the potential to stand next to it in terms of status and influence, depending on if there’s going to be an anime adaptation. (where the production doesn’t fall apart) (despite all the ✨potential✨ talk, i’m not really entirely optimistic about it)

if you’ve ever cried to, say, Your Lie in April, you’ll get deja vu’s. “hey, i’ve seen this plot development a million times before”. perhaps you know the ending already. this is the The Summer You Were There experience, you went in thinking you’ll be fine if you have a rough idea of what was going to happen, and then the story just surprises you with its writing. the author isn’t stupid, it’s just how confident they are at hurting you. i don’t even want to know how many drafts the story had, it’s unbelievable how well written it is. it feels like the author knows all your (emotional) weak spots and they’re touching you(r emotional state) all over the place.

in my opinion, compared to similar works, the manga is oddly realistic? it’s not too optimistic or too pessimistic, it never really goes too far with anything. the groundedness, of course, only made you connect with it more emotionally, like you knew Kaori too.

best action

“best action” is a broad category to mean the broader category of “stories that aren’t primarily just yuri”. entries include magirevo (isekai, action), wataoshi (isekai, comedy), lycoris recoil (i haven’t actually watched this), and more. these tend to be more mainstream as they appeal to more than just yuri fans - and i noticed my top yuri tend to be from this category - but you run the risk of them not taking yuri seriously.

so, the question is how yuriful they are. and it’s a tricky question. the English-speaking yuri community has two major, conflicting ways to define yuri. first, some desire yuri more explicit, born out of the frustration of censorship and subtext. the second is the “this too is yuri” mindset, where everything is yuri as long as you are good enough at seeing it, born out of the infamous “yuri made me human” interview with Iori Miyazawa, author of-

Otherside Picnic, by Iori Miyazawa

Otherside Picnic is a lot. on the surface, it’s a novel about Japanese creepypastas and urban legends manifesting in this strange blue dimension. to be more specific, it’s horrors beyond comprehension viewed in a science fiction lens - the characters aren’t dumb, they know stories don’t just literally manifest our of thin air. they know there are something incomprehensible mimicking ghost stories trying to contact humans, and they fight with illegally acquired guns.

notably, Otherside Picnic is extremely yuriful. you can interpret the first definition of yuri as “how much you trust the author to say it’s yuri”, or you can interpret the latter as “how central is the yuri to its identity”. but regardless, Otherside Picnic passes both with flying colors. it’s marketed as yuri everywhere, it’s written by a yuri mad genius guy, the yuri bond between Sorawo and Toriko is central to the identity.

Otherside Picnic is incredible, not just being a breath of fresh air in a world filled with troupe-y isekai/romcom/yuri slop, but also at maintaining it, juggling everything that makes it unique. the japanese creepypasta/urban legand aspect never fails to be fascinating, whatever they encounter in each file at the otherside never gets stale either. the character writing is always so fascinating, with the most interesting being Sorawo, our protagonist, who has psychopathic(?) traits developed to disassociate herself with her trauma in the past. as for the romance… well, it’s probably one of the best yuri that has ever yuri’d.

though, i must warn, it’s a slow burn, as they wouldn’t confessed or kiss until much later into the story. that is, if you don’t adopt Iori Miyazawa’s “this too is yuri” mindset, because everything about two girls repeatedly going into life or death situations absolutely is yuri. accomplices are the closest relationship in the world, after all.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica, by Magica Quartet

im pretty mad at the internet for essentially underselling it as le magical girl but edgy with some yuri bait. it’s one of the best written stories i’ve seen, ever. and it couldn’t have done that without also being an extremely good magical girl show in its own right. Madoka is obviously less yuriful than Otherside Picnic, but it makes up for it with sheer influence.

and let’s be real, despite not explictly stated as yuri, i don’t really know if you can not see it as anything but yuri. if there’s a story with two girls having sex and the author denying they’re yuri, i would say the author is delusional, cause you literally drew two girls having sex! point is, whatever the fuck that’s going on madoka is clear gayer than gay sex.

best non-yuri: My Mom’s A Superstar!, by 时一二

the yuriless manga end up in the non-yuri pile. some call it a trash pile, others are kinder towards it. there’s a child near the pile. her name is 柚子 / youzi / yuzu. she seems really upset that we’ve put her in there, but it’s true that the manga isn’t a yuri manga per se, but a manga about yuri!

if you look closer, she resembles less of a girl and more of a mirror. after all, humans are mirrors of their environment and everyone they know, more so for children. My Mom’s A Superstar! reflects china. more specifically, Chinese celebrity culture, idol fanservice / queerbaiting, shipping, yuri culture, living as a lesbian, and [spoiler redacted]. youzi’s name itself is an obvious a reference to Citrus, a manga whose influence on the Chinese yuri community is not unlike Iori Miyazawa’s influence on the English community. this seems like quite a lot of topics when you list it out, but a mirror can tell a lot of stories by reflecting everything around it.

i’ve also seen a theory that youzi is the one who’s actually gay, and she’s been projecting onto her mom. this has sooo many implications and pretty much doubles the depth the manga already has.

Magirevo. likewise, the action yuri category is so insanely competitive it doesn’t stand a chance. but if there’s a best isekai category, i’ll definitely pick magirevo. it has one of the best yuri anime adaptations too.
Walk Wit Me, if you want a best psychological category… thought i have no idea how to feel about this super short manga, im not sure if im hurt in a good or bad way.

in the meow_d internal rating system, iyowa has a few “legendary” songs under his belt - namely kyu kurarin, heat abnormal, and the peachy key. 3 songs of that level is more than enough to earn my respect. the least i can do is try to get into his music.

unfortuantely i didn’t enjoy Films, Sunny Spots, Graduations much. i find the songs too similar-sounding, the fact that it’s a super lengthly double album doens’t help. you can say that they’re weak individually, as in, they don’t make much of an impact on me. i feel like i needed to clarify that because the production work and songwriting is anything but weak. if anything, that only made me feel worse about the fact that i didn’t enjoy the album.

there’s also the fact that i can’t understand japanese.. i know i wouldn’t have loved artists like porter robinson and jamie paige if not for their extremely strong lyrics, it makes me sad that non-english speaking fans are probably missing out on a lot. so now it’s their turn to feel bad for me for missing out on the iyowa writing and the iyowa girls and the iyowa girls lore and the iyowa girls love if that’s a thing.

funnily enough, the song that made the biggest impact on me is the last song, graduation ceremony / 卒業式. no vocals or anything, just piano and clapping.wav, a simple combination enough to drive me to tears. it makes me laugh at my own simple feeble mind.

A review of "The Summer You Were There" written at 2am while crying

ok before i start reviewing this, i want you to imagine a scenario.

imagine you’re walking down the streets. somehow, you know for sure you will get stabbed today.

bear with me here.

you can infer that you’ll probably get stabbed after you’ve walked into that dark alleyway, the shortcut google maps wanted you to go.

so you walk into the dark alleyway. there is a suspicious looking man in a hoodie, holding something, walking towards you. you step into a puddle - it was dark and you didn’t notice, and now your socks are wet. you hate that sensation. like scratching an itch, you try to distract yourself from your inevidable fate with that sensation. the man pulls out his knife, and swings it at you.

time slows down. he will hit you in 3 seconds in real time, but your nearly frozen in time. you walked into the alleyway knowing full well you’d get stabbed, and now your have extra time to mentally prepare - the duration of one summer vacation, to be precise.

you start looking at the world around you. your reflection on the ground. the colorful patterns from the oil - you’ve read about the science before but you forgot. the fresh aftersmell of rain. the sensation of wet socks. maybe the world is wonderful right now.

you hated the sensation of wet socks and sweaty clothes, but how could you not marvel at the sight? you’re finally on top of the hill. your throat is dry, after hours of climbing and complaining. you resented your parents for making you go out, you swore you’ll never give in to them again. it feels like you’re on top of the world, nothing gets higher than this. it’s heaven, you’ve never touched clouds with your bare hands before. or are they just fog?

the weather is… cold. you’re not very used to that, not in this country. everyone found a place to sit down. you reach out to the bag for one of those rm1 nasi lemak they bought this morning, and some cadbury chocolate too. thought it’s all melted and sticky by now.

for a moment you were enjoying yourself with them.

hey, what if you’re a genuinely terrible person. you believe it really wasn’t your fault, but something doesn’t add up - the nightmare began the day you swore you would hate them for real. you wanted consequences for them but you can’t win against anyone. all you’re doing is hurting yourself by isolating yourself with everybody, getting offended when your family tries to help you. perhaps it’s time to apologize for real.

“i’m sorry”. they said. you know this is probably the last time you’ll be in this place. it’s nice that your teacher’s doing this activity. “no, it was okay. you didn’t need to apologize.”

guess he’s just trying to be nice. or maybe not. it’s not they that should apologize. it was you. cause you were a child. you belong at the bottom so you created a fantasy where you’re the protagonist. they were your victim too. if they have never met you, maybe they could have lived a normal life. why did you look down on everyone so much? why did you need to pick on him? did that give you a sense of statisfaction? were you so desperate for inside jokes that you’re blind to your cruelty?

you don’t have the answer to those questions. you’re a changed person. no more delusions, you promised to yourself, knowing you’ll continue to regret whatever new you you’ve become. despite the promises, you still don’t have the courage to raise up your hand.

it’ll probably be okay if you did. it’s not like he cares anymore. his life is much better than yours anyways, meanwhile you’re here getting crushed by guilt. but you know apologies can’t solve anything. your soul is tainted with evil. you’re losing faith and has started to think maybe your parents were abusive. a strong word, only someone manipulative would use against their family.

the night passes. you had a great time. at least, as good as it could have been for someone like you. not that someone like you could ever enjoy a party. you know you’ll never work out the courage to confess to her. not that she’ll say yes. you wish you could live like a protagonist of a novel.

before you knew it, you couldn’t bear it anymore, you’re actually crying at an anime. when is the last time that happened? 4 years ago? guess it’s that highly rated on MAL for a reason. the show wasn’t enjoyable, you can’t watch anything from the second hand embarrassment, you nearly dropped it at several different points.

the author knows how to play with your poor little heart. they know your weak points inside out. the stage fright buried deep within your memories. the idea you’ll never see her again. the fact that you’ll never see her again.

if you only had one month to live, you’d to that too. living your life to the fullest with the person who you always thought was out of reach. confess to her. a final dream. a final letter. plot you saw from miles away, but we’re doing it for real. though, maybe it’ll be too cruel to let them cry for you. maybe you should just silently disappear.

surely, you could keep it a secret from her, right? please don’t let your existence be a curse to her.

ok, so, the main primise of denonbu is simple: songs featuring a guest artist and sung by one or more characters. there are novels and manga, but they’re all secondary - the primary denonbu content is the music. and it’s refreshing.

so… how’s the music? it’s really good! i went in assuming a certain sound, having only listened to the more popular songs, especially the moe shop ones. cause with similar franchaises, even with their diversity, you’d still feel like there’s a theme. denonbu, on the other hand, feels more artist focused than anything. its main thing is diversity. you see a song, and you wonder what the artist will bring to the table, unfiltered. you’re getting a full slice of the cake, without anyone shaving off the more unusual flavours, without trying to give you a slice that’s mostly vanilla.

denonbu feels like it’s run by people who genuinely love electronic music. i dunno about you, but when i see an anime franchaise about a subject, i’d assume the authors researched about it, rather than already being a part of the scene. point being, if someone like me were suddenly in charge of denonbu, with my surface level understanding of japanese edm scene, you couldn’t display the same amount of love and care, you couldn’t just research your way out of it.

obviously, randomguyontheinternet Damillora’s series of blog posts does a better job introducing the franchaise than someone who barely knows anything about it. go read those instead.

if you’re here, you probably knew about my vibes images page / gallery dump. it’s a reference to sophia_cisgirl’s vibes images page.

there are several pretty big differences though, mainly the fact that mine isn’t randomized (because im lazy), and it’s laid out nicely in a grid instead of being scattered around. well it’s not really that nice, there are those awkward gaps because masonry isn’t really a thing in css yet. i never bothered to figure out any workarounds.

i think it’s obvious from the content that im from a very different background from sophia. in contrast to her text-heavy screenshots, the vast majority of my images are taken up by anime art i saved to my gallery, a lot of them nsfw. i don’t think sophia’s version is particularly safe-for-work either, but it’s all diluted by the sheer amount of screenshots. so unfortunately now i have friends calling it my “gooner page”, and i had to add a nsfw warning because i didn’t know there are minors clicking on the site. oh well.

in a way, it’s a hybrid of the original vibes images and something like julie’s yuri page, which is why i cited that as an inspiration too. julie is what i like to call the “scientology of orbiters” - interact with her once and she’ll stick around you forever. her personality also happens to feel like it’s engineered in a lab to be as annoying as possible. this is not relevant to the conversation i just felt like being mean to someone. i digress.

i thought i was weird for thinking that studying a person from the little glimpses of their life is cool, so i was just putting myself out there hoping for something. so i was really surprised that people i know actually loved the site and the idea, with some even getting inspired and wanting to make their own….. though i am also very disappointed that no one actually did.

anyways, if you wanna make your own, check out sophia’s gist here for the authentic experience… or just cobble something together yourself, especially if you’re a javascriptphobe. for the images, just go through your pictures folder and copy stuff you want into a folder; you should also add a new album in your gallery app and add stuff there too.

and some common sense: please don’t just dump your entire gallery. make sure whatever’s in there can’t be used to doxx you - though it’s up to you how strict you want to define doxxing (i have a rule where i don’t have images taken anywhere near i live). and strip all the exif data. if you want you also can give them all random file names since they do contain dates and stuff.

vibes images pages are terrible from an opsec perspective, aren’t they? so much juicy information. it’s partially why i removed mine - like, it was cool, i trust everyone who had seen it so far, but i fear it’s gonna come back and bite me at some point.

disorganised university rant

every time i bring up my university i always turn it into a rant on how much i hate it there. cause i really do - i think it’s a colossal education failure and im so miserable because of it.

when i was still studying diploma, the main complaint is always depth. i hated going to uni every day to listen to a lecturer teaching stuff i already know, or stuff i would rather just read on my own instead of wasting 2 hours absorbing it slowly.
the second biggest complain are the groupmates. like, they can’t code, they can’t complete their tasks on time. they ask really basic questions they should have googled/chatgpt’d. then they don’t communicate when they don’t know. maybe they’ll put together some junk near the deadline, maybe i’ll decide to be generous and do their tasks for them.
- i still think it’s inexcusable to be this bad at coding, but in hindsight, it’s hard to really blame them. the difference between someone who can or can’t code is bigger than you’d think. it was unreasonable for me to expect them to be able to just force themselves to do what i do - i was desperate to blame something in a situation where we really don’t have enough good programmers.
- in hindsight, it’s a skill issue on my part. i wasn’t the programmer that i thought i was. if i was, i would have been able to easily do everything on my own.
the assignments are never fulfilling. i love my personal projects to death but i feel like dying whenever i have to work on the assignments. the assignment questions are just… assignment questions. i don’t know if anyone could take pride and joy in an inventory manager made in java swing where you store everything in csv files because you’re not allowed to use databases.
speaking of which, i hate the arbitrary restrictions too. the reasoning is that you’re supposed to only use what you’ve learn in class. this would be more reasonable if they taught everything you actually need in class, but they don’t. maybe it’s because the programmers are too new for anything advanced - for example, there’s a web dev module where it’s the students first time learning html, css, sql, and php all at once. like, i hated how they never taught basic stuff like sanitizing your sql queries or let us use frameworks, but that would have been overwhelming. things have improved on degree though - the modules tend to be more practical, the assignments tend to be more open ended - and therefore, fun.
assignments often require knowledge that are taught near the end of the module. meaning: you either have to start your assignments late, or learn early on your own. of course, a good student would chose the latter… but when you do, what’s the point of the classes?
you’d think the problem of depth wouldn’t matter in degree, where the difficulty and depth is significantly bumped up. unfortunately, they’ve chosen to prioritise breadth over depth. like, to their credit, each module do have a decent amount of depth now; but there are so many modules it gets super duper overwhelming. the assignments also are so overwhelming now i can’t focus in class properly, i just go to classes to do assignments now.
the idea of having this many modules seems flawed. are you just expected to round-robin the modules and assignments in your head? cause i can’t. there’s so much overhead involved with switching. i can’t even worry about schoolwork properly in my free time, there are 8 different things and i have to choose one to worry about.
their idea of breadth also seems flawed. most modules don’t really have much to do with your specialization anyways. i have no idea why they don’t teach stuff like version control. if you want breadth you might as well teach something everyone needs to know?

i know that everyone says “it’s no longer high school, you’re on your own, you have to rely on yourself”. i don’t disagree, i just think it shouldn’t be this way, considering how much we paid for the education.

On beginners and LLMs

i remember watching a youtube video on Grammarly, on how it markets itself to people who aren’t good at english, yet it often gives bad advice. the conclusion is that, ironically, Grammarly is only good in the hands of someone good at english - who can differentiate between the good and bad advice.

i see a similar thing with LLMs. they are extremely frustrating to beginners for several reasons: beginners have a harder time differentiating low quality responses, and LLMs’ inability to offer opinionated guidance - being slop machines that’s designed to be as unopinionated as possible. meanwhile, skilled programmers know how to utilize it well as a Large Language Model, and can easily overcome any problem anyways if LLMs can’t solve them.

though, what that Grammarly video and a lot of people miss is that, to a lot of beginners, these tools are better than none at all. cause asking for help is hard! you need to first know someone knowledgeable, then formulate a question properly, and you have to be considerate to the other person. on the other hand, the barrier of entry to ask an LLM is literally the same as using a search engine. it’s a machine where you can say whatever you want without consequence, in exchange for having inconsistent quality of results. LLMs might only be intern-level, but they are intern-level at pretty much everything out there.

so here’s the boring conclusion that you already agree with: technology is cool but we should be honest. don’t overhype them. don’t replace the old ways with the shiny new tech just to make everything cheaper at all costs. something something capitalism sux.

something i wanted to write to my 14-year-old self

i think everyone said this exact sentence when they were 14: “just because you’re young doesn’t mean you can’t be mature, just because you’re older doesn’t mean you’re mature”.

it’s a ridiculous sentence to everyone past 14, it’s tempting to project your past self and laugh at these kids. but that’s not only ineffective, it’s also misses the point.

if i have to explain it to my past self, i would explain it like this…

imagine the 12-year-old you. they’re cringe as hell, right? the jokes, all the delusions they had, the way they treated people. for the past two years, you’ve fucked up a lot. but you learned a lot in the process.

would you trust them to do anything you do now?

now imagine yourself in next two years. you will also fuck up a lot. you will also learn things the hard way. would they trust you, at all?

communication is hard, no one can ever fully master it. i know you believe you can through sheer kindness. i know you love pointing at examples of adults fucking up, but that’s my point. you cannot solve communication, you cannot be so emotionally mature you become zen. the only thing you can do is spend time on earth to learn things the hard way.

i think it would be rude to look down on someone individually just for their age. but community building is a different story - having a more diverse age group really, really matters for a healthy community. the communities you’re in right now suck because they are filled with mostly teenagers who don’t know how to handle conflict. which i know you hate.

my point is, you should also hang out with older people. you’d be surprised by how kind people are.

i learned (neo)vim and it was disappointing

i got into neovim recently. my small laptop has 8gbs of ram and it keeps running out. so i figured i need something more lightweight. i probably should have tried configuring Marksman LSP on Micro (the terminal editor i was previously using), but whatever.

though, that experience completely shattered my image of the vim way of text editing. it has always been presented to me as the superior way, albeit with a steep learning curve. but when you’re a beginner, it’s just okay. different. a tradeoff. it has disadvantages and advantages.

for one, im surprised by the amount of stuff that takes more keystrokes or mental overhead in (n)vim compared to conventional editors. im currently primarily struggling with the cursor - i kept pressing a when i meant i. i thought i was used to it but the mental overhead gets overwhelming when im super tired on that day. it’s something that i’ll get used to eventually, just a natural part of learning (n)vim.

it’s very easy to dismiss problems like these after it’s not longer a problem for you, but i think there’s value in conventional text editors for being intuitive. with code editors and IDEs adding the much needed depth to it, you can have 80% of the advantages of vim with much less effort, and all without leaving what you already know.

imo (n)vim is straight up inferior when you’re a beginner, as the main appeal is depth - more amount of depth than anything else, so much that you realistically never run out. and with enough effort, you can reach god levels of text editing, much faster than what is possible conventionally. which is an extremely appealing idea, especially to someone like me.

though, im not even sure if it’s worth it. i already spend so much time configuring and learning nvim, time and effort that i could have used for anything else. if i want the best bang for your buck, im better off sticking to vscode for everything. people talk about vim, linux, and cast iron pans the same way - we dismiss concerns on the learning curve because it’s a given, because we’re sitting comfortably on what we’ve built for ourselves, skilled enough that these problems aren’t problems anymore. in a way, dismissing every disadvantage while only looking at the bright side, not taking the effort into account when you talk about how great it is, because it’s supposedly the superior way of doing things.

in conclusion,, neovim good. neovim overrated. i love neovim. i will be using it a lot.

setup a listed.to blog through Standard Notes
go to settings > general tab > apperance section > tick ‘enable custom css’, and save changes
create a new note
1. you can name it whatever you want, but call it something like style.css to avoid confusion
2. put the metatype: css yaml frontmatter
3. start writing (or copying) some css!
4. publish the note like it’s a regular post! it won’t get published as a post, i promise…. if you do it right.
