Too white
It’s not like I don’t understand “too white”, because I’m not white, it sucks to be in a space where everyone is the same race and culture, where no one understands that everything is harder for you. I agree that Americans have the duty to make space for the underprivileged Americans.
But I’m never a fan of those criticisms, most of them are guilty of the same thing they’re trying to solve. People just ignore non Americans who have to learn English to be here, and assume everyone who isn’t an American minority is white. At worst, calling someone spiritually white as if learning English is a personal fault, as if they’re actually privileged.
Obviously international spaces can feel white to people, because we’re communicating in English and we’ve all whitewashed ourselves to some degree. But people do generally understand that, globalization makes us lose a bit more of ourselves, and in exchange bought us together with what we have in common. We try our best to compensate by sometimes posting in our own languages and trying to learn about each others’ cultures.
“Too white” an American complain on what American spaces should be based on American sensibilities. I’ve known that the internet is America first so it’s not like I’m bummed out about it. But it’s still watching people excluding your existence, except the people doing it are a tiny bit more diverse now. Horray?
